The ASUL Lyon Volley embodies the volleyball activities in Lyon


Volleyball made an appearance in the sporting scene of Lyon at the end of World War II, in 1945, when the club of the ASUL Lyon Volleyball was created. It now competes between the Ligue A and B, the two best professional leagues in France.


The ASUL Lyon Volley was created in 1945 and is the source of volleyball in Lyon, which was one of the most famous sports clubs in the region after World War II, more than soccer itself.

The ASUL Lyon Volley is the city’s professional volleyball team and competes between the Ligue A and Ligue B, top-tier and second-tier leagues in France, in the Palais des Sports of Gerland.

The club also provides a structure for anyone interested in practicing volleyball as a leisure activity.

The ASUL Lyon Volley won the Ligue B championship in 2011

The ASUL Lyon Volley has recently won the Ligue B championship in 2011 and finished as the Ligue B runner-up in 2013, accessing each time the Ligue A.

Since 2009, the ASUL Lyon Volley has taken turns between the Ligue A and Ligue B with relative success.

The best season of the ASUL Lyon Volley’s history happened in 2014-15 : the team ended up the regular season at the 3rd place and then reached the semifinals of the Ligue A Playoffs, loosing to the Paris Volley.


Financial issues set the club back in the 1990s

The ASUL Lyon Volley suffered financial issues during the 1990s, forcing the team to drop to the Nationale 2 league, which is the fourth division in French volleyball hierarchy.

It climbed up to the Nationale 1 league in 1999 and then the Pro B league in 2000, respectively known today as Elite league and Ligue B.

The team dropped again in Nationale 1, top-level amateur league, before returning to the professional ranks in 2009.

The ASUL, association of sports clubs

The ASUL Lyon Volley is one of the 15 autonomous sports clubs affiliated to the « Lyon Association of University Sports » or ASUL. The structure was created in 1990 following the dissolution of the ASUL omnisports club, university club in Lyon since 1935.

The association regroups many sports clubs dedicated primarily for leisure activities in athletics, rowing, basketball, horse riding, football, handball, karaté, diving, tennis, table tennis and ultimate freesbie.

With an outreach across Lyon, Villeurbanne, Vaulx-en-Velin and Bron, the ASUL clubs are represented by over 6500 subscribers.

The formation center, provider of players

Most players of the ASUL Lyon Volley come from France, and especially the club’s formation center.

Historically known for being a formation center, the ASUL Lyon Volley has built a continuing program in order to train young players for the club’s elite team.


Foreign players also come to play in Lyon. The 2017-18 team features two Canadian players, Bryan Fraser and Maxwell Burt. The latter plays for the Canadian National Team.


The volleyball women’s team, with success during the 1970s

The ASUL Lyon Volley features a women’s team which was pretty successful in the 1970s.

The women’s team was crowned champion of the French top-level league in 1976, 1979 and 1980. The 1976 season was one for the records books with the participation in the European Cup finale.

Today, the women’s team has fallen from grace and plays in the amateur ranks, at the departmental level.

The Petit Palais des Sports, home of the club in Gerland

The Palais des Sports, and more particularly the Petit Palais, is the home of the ASUL Lyon Volley professional team. Some games are exported in the contiguous hall of the Grand Palais.

The club plays in the sporting complex of the Gerland neighborhood, located in the 7th arrondissement of Lyon right across the Stade de Gerland, for around 10 games every season.

The leisure activities of the ASUL Lyon Volley occurs in the Gymnase Colbert, in the 3rd arrondissement near Université Lyon 3 in Sans-Souci, or in the Gymnase Longchambon, in the 8th arrondissement, close from the Parc de Parilly.

How to get to the Palais des Sports ?

  • By car : take Lyon’s highway, exit at the « Musée des Confluences » interchange and then drive towards the Tony Garnier concert hall and the Tony Garnier avenue.
  • By public transportation : take the metro line B and stop at Stade de Gerland, which is located less than 100 meters from the Palais des Sports.
