The AS Saint-Etienne could fall into the American flagship with the takeover bid from Peak6 Investments.
PEAK6 Investments has entered into exclusive negotiations with club’s presidents Bernard Caïazzo and Roland Romeyer for the acquisition of the iconic French football club of AS Saint-Etienne, the club revealed on May 15th.
Matt Hulsizer could enter the French football landscape by purchasing the ASSE. According to RMC Sport, the co-founder of PEAK6 made a 40-to-50 million euros bid in order to takover the AS Saint-Etienne
“We are extremely proud to enter into exclusive negotiations with Bernard Caïazzo and Roland Romeyer. AS Saint-Etienne is one of the great French clubs with a proud history and strong traditions. We look forward to being a part of the club’s future success,” announced Jérôme De Bontin, former AS Monaco president and current representative of PEAK6 to Saint-Etienne.
PEAK6 involved in sports in the United States and England
Matt Hulsizer is a minority shareholder for the Italian football club of the AS Roma and the English football club of FC Bournemouth. He also owns the professional ice hockey franchise of the Minnesota Wild in the NHL.
Exclusive negociations will run until May 25th with the current presidents of the ASSE, Roland Romeyer et Bernard Caïazzo.
According to the official press release, PEAK6 is expected to appoint Jérôme de Bontin as President of the club to represent Matt Hulsizer in Saint-Etienne. Jérôme De Bontin has previous experience as President of the AS Monaco and former General Manager for the football club of New York Red Bull.
Arsène Wenger or Claude Puel to become the ASSE next manager?
Departing Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger and Leicester City manager Claude Puel were both approached by Jérôme De Bontin for a major role in the new ASSE organization, according to Nabil Djellit, journalist for the French sports newspaper L’Equipe.
Claude Puel is a familiar face in Lyon: he was the former Olympique Lyonnais manager from 2008 to 2011.
Will a second football club in France be owned by an American businessman? The American investor could join Frank McCourt in the French Ligue 1, who took over the Olympique de Marseille in 2017 with immediate success.
Saint-Etienne, one of the most legendary football clubs in France
The Olympique Lyonnais archrival, Saint-Etienne, has faced recurrent financial issues, which had a negative effect on the club’s performances. The potential takeover could lead “Les Verts” back to sporting prominence in the French Ligue 1.
The ASSE is one of the most legendary football clubs in France thanks to a record of 10 Ligue 1 titles, mostly earned during the 1960s and 1970s.
“Les Verts” are a national brand and have become famous in the past with the help of iconic players such as Michel Platini.
