IndigoWeel Rental Bikes Find Success During First Month in Lyon

With Few Damages and Rising Active Users, IndigoWeel Looks Towards Lyon Future

The bike rental company IndigoWeel has been in Lyon for a month now, and shows signs of success.

IndigoWeel bike rentals launched in Lyon on March 12. After the success of the first month, they are now looking to expand.

The company, already active in Bordeaux, Tours, and Metz, came to Lyon just after GobeeBike pulled out of the city due to mass destruction of their bikes.

But IndigoWeel’s the 1090 white and purple two-wheelers placed around the city in last month seem to be doing better.

In its first month in Lyon, IndigoWeel has registered 2600 active users and 9000 total bike rentals, according to Le Progrès. Additionally, only 50 bikes, or 5% of the stock, have been damaged and only five have disappeared entirely.

The service appears to have taken to the city much better than GobeeBike, which did not wish to reveal the figures for its Lyon failure.

Now, IndigoWeel is looking to the future, hoping to expand to 2000 bikes by the start of the summer and extend their reach to Gerland, more of Villeurbanne, and possibly the Bron Parilly area around the Université Lyon 2 campus.

IndigoWeel bikes use geolocation and a smartphone app that allows users to lock and unlock bikes parked throughout the city. Unlike the city’s prominent Velo’v system, IndigoWeel bikes do not have to be brought back to a specific locking station.

The bikes can be rented for 50 cents per half hour, five euros per day, or in a subscription, starting at €59.
