The main road will be closed to all automobile traffic for over a year

The construction work at Part-Dieu will reach a new high next week, with the closure of Boulevard Vivier Merle.

Starting on Monday, Boulevard Vivier Merle will be closed to all traffic through the end of 2019, as part of the major construction project to refurbish the Part-Dieu train station. The road will be affected between Rue Paul Bert and Rue Servient in Lyon 3.

The closure will allow needed work under the Vivier-Merle tunnel to take place, extending it 100 meters to leave more space above ground for public transport and pedestrians.

The rebuilt section will also provide access to a new underground parking garage by the train station.

Automobiles will be diverted around the construction, though the road is still open to bikes and pedestrians. Public transport lines will run more frequently around the area, to make the transition easier.

The work will only be affecting Vivier Merle between Rue Paul Bert and Rue Servient; other sections of the road will remain open to all traffic. The tunnel will be reopened in February of 2020.
