NordicWalkin’Lyon: exercise and culture, what else?

Why not take your usual Sunday-morning stroll and turn it into a more in-depth and athletic walk around Lyon, discovering its most iconic locations? Join the NordicWalkin’Lyon, from October 13th to 14th 2018!

Nordic Walk, for those of you who aren’t familiar, is a sport: it is a full-body version of walking, a tad more athletic, accompanied by special walking sticks (or poles). This organization made a whole event of it!

NordicWalkin’Lyon is unique in its kind, at least in France. For its third edition, it is offering 4 courses, allowing participants of all kinds and all levels to visit the city’s most famous sites while getting their exercise in. Berges du Rhône and Saône, Place Bellecour, Collines de la Croix Rousse and Fourvière, Vieux Lyon, Confluence… you’ll see it all !

The courses are 7, 12, 16 or 21 km-long, on pedestrian routes made of stable tarmac, which will be marked and secured: ideal, safe conditions. There will also be refreshment points and even a few heritage guides who will be giving guided tours along the walks.

NordicWalkin’Lyon from October 13th to 14th at Parc de Gerland

All the itineraries have the same departure date, the 14th of October, but different times: 8:30 AM for the 21-km walk, 9:30 for the 12 and 16-km walks, and 10:30 for the 7-km walk. All participants have a common, 30-minute warm-up before their departure. The 7-km participants, however, will first take the subway up to Vieux Lyon, thanks to the guidance of the event’s volunteers, where their route starts.

You can check out the more specific images of each walk’s itinerary on their website, which has an English translation.

Not particularly interested in participating but still want to know more about this sport? Well, they are also organizing a Nordic Walk Convention on the Petite Prairie site of the Parc de Gerland. It is an equipment manufacturer exhibition with free activities, in the presence of federations as well as other actors in the health and sport industry.

This event is free for children between the ages of 6 and 12 (because you must be at least 6 years old to participate), with a parental authorization. For anyone else, it can vary from 14 to 33 euros, depending on the length of the walk and where or when the ticket is bought.

Extra tips: walking sticks can be lent to you for free on the day of the walk and if you are looking for somewhere to stay, the NordicWalkin’Lyon’s partnership with Ibis hotels makes it so that you can get discounted hotel fees!
