The Europa League Final is played in Lyon in 2018… but without the Olympique Lyonnais.
The UEFA Europa League, second-tier European championship between football clubs, will crown its champion in Lyon on May 16th.
The Europa League final game travels to Lyon in 2018 as the 59,000-seat Groupama Stadium was chosen to stage one of the main football events of the season’s calendar.
The city of Lyon did not host a European final game since 1986.
The Olympique Lyonnais was eliminated of the Europa League in the round of 16 against CSKA Moscow, loosing the chance to win the competition in its home stadium.
Four teams still in play to win the Europa League
Four teams still pretend to win the Europa League in semifinals : Olympique de Marseille, Red Bull Salzburg, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid.
Two of them will meet in Groupama Stadium, located in the eastern suburbs of Lyon in Décines-Charpieu.
The Europa League winner’s trophy arrived in Lyon on April 13th and will be showcased until May 15th in the Gadagne Museums courtyard, located in the 5th arrondissement known as « Vieux Lyon ».
Groupama Stadium, home of major football competitions
Besides the Europa League final game, the Groupama Stadium is set to host other major football events.
The opening game, the semifinals and the final game of the Women’s World Cup in 2019 will take place in Lyon.
Inaugurated in January 2016, the Groupama Stadium was also the stage of six games during the Nations European Cup in 2016, and most notably the semifinals between Portugal and Wales.
